Understanding Natural Hair

I recently read an internet blog about things that naturals should do. When I first read it, I immediately thought, the writer must not be natural. Why do I think that? Because the writer suggest that naturals need to wash the hair once a week. However, she is a natural. Who would've thought?

First let me say, we wash clothes. We shampoo hair. If we (naturals) shampooed our hair once a week, it would strip our hair of it's natural oils. The writer then says that they make facial expression when they hear that naturals shampoo their hair once 3-4 times a week. NO, our hair is not dirty for a month, as we co-wash with conditioner. It's called co-washing and it still cleanses our hair but using conditioner instead of shampoo keeps our hair soft, moisturized and does not strip it's natural oil. We can co-wash our hair 1-2 times a week.

The writer suggest that naturals should wash their bonnet. Whether you are natural or relaxed, a clean satin/silk bonnet and pillowcase is essential to avoid hair breakage. That's a no brainer.

Next, the writer said that naturals need to clean your hair products. She showed a picture with hair in a product. I agree, that's nasty but I don't know anyone that has hair balls in their products. No one moisturizes or saves balls of hair in their product. Some do save the hair that has come out during detangling in a plastic ziplock bag to do patch/strand test, if they decide to color (not dye) their hair.

I'm not sure what blogs, social media pages or pictures, she has seen but I think most naturals take care of their hair the best they can. Of course, with proper education and a regimen, they can grow and maintain healthy hair. Organic Hair & Health Spa specializes in natural hair, offers private one on one consultations, educates you on at home maintenance in between salon appointment and has mobile service. Call Organic to schedule an appointment at 443-631-0616.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of how naturals take care of their hair. We Shampoo, Condition, Deep Condition with a Moisturizer or Protein Treatment, and Seal in the Moisture before styling our hair. At night, we sleep with a clean silk bonnet on a satin pillowcase, like relaxed hair should. Being natural just takes more time to style your hair but I wouldn't trade my natural hair for anything. I've been natural for over 20 years and I love it.

Homemade Foam Soap

I've sure had a lot of extra time on my hand  to research and experiment with somethings. When you adapt to a healthy lifestyle, you begin to evaluate people, places and things that are around you. I started making my own febreeze , due to my daughter and I allergies. Soon afterwards, I began making body scrubs, lip balm and anything natural I could think of.

Today is a snow day so I decided to make some foaming hand soap to put at each sink. Who wants to spend $4.79 on foaming hand soap, at local retailers? Not this #FrugalDIVAH. So, I filled my container with pump almost to the top with hot water. Next, add 2 tbsp of liquid castile soap ($3.25 DIVAH BOUTIQUE ). Then add 1/2 of Sweet Almond oil ($8, DIVAH BOUTIQUE) and any essential oil for a nice scent. Screw on top , change it up and you're ready to wash away.

Lee Thompson Young and Mental Illness

Lee Thompson Young who starred as Jett Jackon on Disney was found dead with what appeared as an self inflicted gun shot wound to the head, in his LA apartment by his landlord, after he failed to show up to work on Monday, August 19th. Lee had a very promising career, as an actor. He was currently working as a detective on TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles" as Detective Barry Frost.

At 29 years young, he had already accomplished so much. I can only imagine the pressures he has had ,as a young handsome successful actor. So, why commit sucide? Who knows what he was thinking or going through. Many people successful or not suffer from Mental Illness, it's a silent killer. Contrary to belief, everyone who commits suicide is not a drug abuser. Some are born with mental illness like biopolar and schizophrenia. Anxiety is a silent killer. Many suffer from it and don't know that they have it. Thus, they use over the counter medicines, herbal treatments or are misdiagnosed.

Take the time to talk to your love ones and take a love one to the doctors if you suspect that they maybe going through something. Let's keep Lee Thompson Young family in our prayers.

Our Natural Hair Journey and Hair Care Regimen

Have you noticed that everyone is embracing their natural skin , hair and nails? I absolutely LOVE IT!!! I have been natural for near 20 years. I have spent so much money on stylist and products before I went back to maintaining and making my own products.

Back in the day we would use coconut oil (bergamot hair grease) and water. Our hair was healthy and maintain good moisture. If we had dry flaky scalp, we would wash our hair with pine tar (stinky), an egg, mayo and olive oil protein homemade conditioner and style our hair as usually.

Now we have so many products to choose from Motions, Patene, Giovanni, Suave, Organix, and more. I believe if we go back to what we used to do, we will have healthier longer hair. I do love The Original Mane 'n Tail Deep Moisturizing Conditioner and their Herbal Growth Shampoo.

Like everything else, our hair needs balance and protein to remain and healthy and grow. So, I give myself a protein treatment once a month to restore the balance and strengthen the follicle using an egg, honey, coconut oil, wheat protein , olive oil and shea butter. This treatment helps me keep my kinky curls.

Today, my Mini-me decided to do the "Big Chop" so I cut all of her permed hair off . She was so excited to go natural again but wanted to cry, when she saw her hair on the floor. Of course, she asked, "How am I going to style my hair?"  Doesn't everyone ask the same question? LOL
She will begin with wash and go's and twist.

To support her natural hair journey, I decided to cut off 8' of my hair. Being natural is fun and you learn how to love the skin your in and your hair too. :) The best part is, The Journey Never Ends.

Franklin Institute

Enjoyed the day in Philadelphia, home of the Philadelphia,Eagles with FAET.

The students had a great time learning about trains, planes, the human heart, blood flow and even sports.

A nice museum to take your family or homeschool group.

Grown Men with Teen Brides

I've just finished watching the last episode of  VH1's Couple's Therapy, Courtney Stodden said that she "Sometimes forgets that she is married". I will NEVER understand why some parents allow their minor children to be in adult relationships. At 16 years old, Courtney's parents allowed her to marry, 51 year old, Doug Hutchison. Now let's do the math 51-16=35, right? What do they have in common? Doug was 35 when she was born.

Hello??? I know I can't be the only one in the world that knows (not thinks) that something is wrong with this. Some would say , "It's no ones business." but true enough it is. It's like giving him permission to be a child molester, as some of the cast members said.

Sources connected to the show told TMZ that Stodden and Hutchison have acknowledged that there are "obvious problems in their relationship because of their age difference and the notoriety they've gotten because of their relationship."

Remember, Robert Kelly & Aaliyah (RIP) marriage...

on August 31, 1994. Aaliyah was 15 years old and Kelly was 27. Now, let's do he math again, 27-15= 12. So, he was in Middle School when she was born. What do they have in common at that age, nothing. Source said he married her because she was pregnant with his child. Vibe magazine published the marriage license which showed that Aaliyah has listed her age as 18 on the marriage license making it invalid by law and paving the way an annulment. Now, what 15 year old is aware that if she lies about her age,so they can get married without parental consent. Hmm, I'll wait...

Then, in 2002, a sex tape of R.Kelly former protégé Sparkles 14 year old niece, popped up in every urban neighborhood and flooded the internet. People were outraged at the acts that took place, especially when he urinated on the 14 year old. Later in June 2002, Kelly was indicted in Chicago for 21 counts of having sex with a minor, which were later reduced to soliciting a minor for child pornography, seven counts of videotaping the acts, and seven counts of producing child pornography. These charges came after viewing the tapes showed that there was no actual sexual intercourse involved.

You can google the story for more information.  I think there should be some laws in place to protect children when their parents will not.
